About the Project
After photographing all participating artists for the 2025 Dandenong Ranges Open Studios, this year’s project focused on documenting the new studios joining the event. Open Studios invites the community to explore artists’ creative spaces over two weekends, making the photography brief clear: capture the artist, their work, and the studio environment in a way that encourages visitors to add them to their weekend itinerary.
As the event photographer, I needed to balance three essential elements in each shoot. The artist themselves – showing the personality and passion behind the practice. Their artwork – presenting pieces in a way that translates online and sparks interest. And their studio space – giving potential visitors a genuine sense of the environment they’ll experience, whether it’s a light-filled painter’s loft, a sculptor’s workshop, or a ceramicist’s kiln room.
These images work across the Dandenong Ranges Open Studios website and all marketing materials, helping the community plan their art trail and connecting people with the diverse creative practices thriving in the hills. It’s documentation that serves both the artists – giving them professional representation – and the event organisers, who need compelling imagery to promote what makes Open Studios such a unique community experience.
